Stop AIDS Campaign

Through  the work in many diverse communities, the SSHC identified the HIV/Aids pandemic as a priority and launched the Stop AIDS campaign in December 2008 to help fight the HIV/Aids pandemic through education, voluntary testing, counselling and lifestyle awareness programmes; In partnership with the NGO, New Start, and the Department of Health, about 100 volunteers work in different areas throughout Johannesburg, often organising more than one event a day. They distribute condoms and provide free testing and counselling in an effort to reduce the rate of HIV infections by promoting awareness and prevention and encouraging lifestyle changes. The Department of Health supplies between three and four million condoms each month and ranks the SSHC as the second largest distributor of condoms in the Gauteng area. Many of the informal settlements they visit do not have access to clinics or condoms, and statistics reflect a decline of up to 30% in infections in high-prevalence areas since these campaigns started.

SSHC volunteers have been trained by the Department of Health to become peer educators and lifestyle-change facilitators. Teams are also trained to provide spiritual guidance and emotional counselling as an important aspect of the help provided. They have been successful in influencing communities positively.
