Established in December 1996 and registered as a non-profit organisation the following year, the SSHC was initially involved in poverty and hunger alleviation programmes – providing food hampers, distributing basic necessities and running feeding schemes. Before long, sustainability became a concern and the need for skills training to enable families to become self-supporting resulted in training workshops which equip people to start their own small businesses. This has become a model for the SSHC. Selected recipients are assisted for a limited time period while they are trained and empowered to become financially independent, then they are expected to become productive members of society. Many who have benefitted from this project have started their own small businesses and regained their pride and self-confidence.The SSHC will be out with the Shoprite mobile soup trailer @ the following regions.
